Catriona Thomas MA, MCIL – your legal translator

My profile accentuates my resolute specialization in legal translation as well as my extensive experience in the various contexts of legal work:

Qualifications:

  • English native speaker: Born and educated in London (UK)

  • Trained as a specialist legal translator at the Munich Institute of Translation and Interpreting (SDI) (guest student).

  • Fully qualified interpreter and translator

  • Publicly appointed, sworn translator

  • 10 years professional experience as a staff legal translator at a Top-10 German law firm based in Munich.

  • 9 years experience as an editorial assistant for an English-language legal journal published by the Max-Planck-Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich.

  • Regular continuing professional development in legal matters and interpreting techniques.

  • Member of the German Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (BDÜ), the leading professional association in Germany that qualified translators alone are permitted to join.

  • Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), the leading English association for translators and linguists; strict membership requirements apply.

I established myself as a freelance interpreter and translator in Karlsruhe in 2008. Law firms, federal courts, notary’s offices, police and other authorities, business enterprises and individuals commission me to translate their legal documents into English. My repertoire also includes other documents of a predominantly legal nature, for example contributions to legal journals and websites for law firms.

I am involved in an active network of colleagues with similar qualifications. A lively exchange of views and mutual support ensure the continual transfer of knowledge and the regular benchmarking of my own translation practices.
